About the Organization โ€” Violence Intervention Program (VIP)

Established by Black and Latina activists in 1984, the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) is NYCโ€™s only culturally specific organization with a mission to address domestic and sexual violence within Latine communities. Each year, we provide intensive support and services to 3,500+ survivors and children and reach 15,000+ community members through community events and preventive education. We are committed to developing innovative programs that respond to the needs of our diverse community and reflect our organizational values.

About the Role โ€” Development Assistant

This is an excellent opportunity for an organized professional looking to build a career in nonprofit fundraising while advancing social justice. As Development Assistant, youโ€™ll work closely with the Associate Director of Individual Giving and Operations to gain hands-on experience in donor stewardship, fundraising administration, database management, and special events.

As part of our small but mighty team, youโ€™ll collaborate with colleagues across VIP, interact directly with donors, partners, and members of our Board of Directors, and jump in wherever needed to keep development operations running smoothly.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Support individual and corporate fundraising efforts, including donor and prospect research.
  • Maintain accurate donor records, gifts, interactions, and notes in VIPโ€™s donor database.
  • Prepare gift acknowledgments, thank-you letters, and other donor correspondence.
  • Generate donor reports, prospect and mailing lists, and other fundraising data.
  • Help keep development files, documents, and procedures organized and up to date.
  • Support fundraising events, including VIPโ€™s annual benefit, with event logistics, communications, materials, donor lists, sponsor recognition, and follow-up.
  • Provide administrative support to the Associate Director, including calendar management, meeting agendas, notes, and follow-up.

What Youโ€™ll Need

  • 1โ€“3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Systems and data comfort: High comfort managing data, generating reports, and maintaining donor database integrity with precision.
  • Organizational chops: Strong project coordination and time-management skills, with pride in delivering accurate, orderly, and polished work.
  • Exceptional communication: Clear, thoughtful written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage thoughtfully with diverse community partners and donors.
  • Mission alignment: A grounded commitment to VIPโ€™s mission of supporting survivors and ending gender-based violence.
  • Language: Fluency in English is required; Spanish proficiency or fluency is a strong plus.

Compensation & Benefits

As an organization led by and for people of color and survivors of violence, we care deeply about our teamโ€™s wellness. We offer unlimited PTO, flexible work schedules, a hybrid workplace, health benefits coverage up to 90% for staff and their families, a 403(b) retirement plan, a staff-led wellness committee, and dedicated time to connect as a team. We are an evolving workplace and welcome input from our staff as we continue building an affirming, uplifting culture.

The hiring range for this position is an annual salary of $60,000 to $65,000. The final salary within this range is determined based on candidate qualifications and relevant experience. To uphold equity across our team, once an offer is made, we do not negotiate compensation.

Location & Schedule

  • Office Location: East Harlem (near the Lexington & 125th St station).
  • In-Office Schedule: Full-time position requiring at least two days per week in the office.
  • Remote Schedule: You are welcome to work remotely during regular office hours the remainder of the week, with occasional additional in-person days based on operational and event needs.
  • Event Attendance: Core member of the development team expected to attend all VIP fundraising and networking events.

The Application Process

VIP has engaged Equitable Hiring Group to support this hiring process. To apply, please complete the short form to the right.

Please submit your application by Wednesday, November 11th. Our simple process makes it easy to apply early!

To ensure an equitable review, we ask that you remove the names of the schools you attended (both undergraduate and graduate) from your resume. Please retain the degree itself. For example, instead of “Greendale Community College - B.A. Economics,” simply list “B.A. Economics.”

This evaluation process will follow practices shown to reduce bias in decision-making and may be different from other application processes you have experienced.

The overall evaluation process will look to follow this anticipated timeline:

  • Early November: Selected candidates will be asked to complete a short-answer questionnaire.
  • Mid-November: Selected candidates will participate in a video interview with VIP staff.
  • Late November: Selected candidates will be asked to complete a paid, timed trial project.
  • Early December: Selected candidates will participate in a video panel interview with multiple team members.
  • Early December: Finalist candidates will come for an in-person interview and tour our office.
  • Mid December: Offer extended.
  • Early January: Anticipated Start Date
